Coffee on an empty stomach is usually not harmful for healthy people, but it can feel stronger and less comfortable than a cup after breakfast. Caffeine reaches your blood faster when your stomach is empty, coffee stimulates stomach acid, and cortisol is naturally high in the first hours after waking. A glass of water, a small bite first, a smaller cup and slower sips make the morning gentler for many people.
What happens in your stomach
Coffee does more than wake you up. It stimulates the stomach to produce acid, and the drink itself contains acids. When you have eaten, the food in your stomach softens the effect. On an empty stomach there is nothing to soften it, so some people feel a burning sensation, nausea, a rumbling stomach or heartburn.
Others notice nothing at all. Sensitivity varies a lot from person to person, and the same cup that one person drinks all morning can leave another feeling uneasy after a few sips.
Why the effect feels stronger in the morning
Without food to slow it down, caffeine is absorbed faster. The peak arrives sooner, so the effect can feel sharper: a quicker pulse, shaky hands or a wired feeling.
Then there is cortisol. This hormone is naturally higher in the first hours after waking, and it helps your body get going. Caffeine can also temporarily raise adrenaline and cortisol, so on top of a high morning level some people feel jittery or restless. If that sounds familiar, read our longer article coffee and anxiety: why coffee can cause anxiety and what to do or visit the page anxiety after coffee.
Empty stomach or after breakfast
| Factor | On an empty stomach | After breakfast |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine absorption | Faster, with a sharper peak | Slower, with a gentler rise |
| Stomach | Nothing softens the acid, so a burning feeling is more likely | Food softens the effect of the acid |
| Typical feeling | Can feel strong or jittery for sensitive people | Usually steadier |
Who feels it most
Not everyone does. You may notice it more if:
- you are sensitive to caffeine or only drink coffee now and then
- you have a sensitive stomach or are prone to heartburn
- you slept badly the night before
- you drink a large or strong cup in a hurry
- you have not had a glass of water since you woke up
For orientation, EFSA considers up to 400 mg of caffeine a day safe for healthy adults, and up to 200 mg in a single dose. These are upper limits, not targets, and many people feel best with much less.
How to drink coffee more gently in the morning
A few small changes are usually enough. You do not have to give up your morning coffee.

- Drink water first. Have a glass before your coffee.
- Eat something small. Oats, yoghurt, a banana or a slice of bread is enough.
- Choose a smaller cup. Start with half of your usual amount.
- Slow down. Sip your coffee instead of finishing it in a few minutes.
- Keep it milder. A weaker brew or less espresso means less caffeine at once.
- Watch the pattern. For a week, write down what you had and how you felt.
If your coffee still feels harsh on an empty stomach, move it to after breakfast. Nothing says it has to be the first thing you drink.
Low acid coffee
If acidity bothers you, the coffee itself can matter too. Ra Hygge mushroom coffee is organic Peruvian arabica, roasted in small batches in Sweden, with mushroom fruiting body extract added. It is a low acid coffee: Lion's Mane coffee has a pH of up to 6.0, while regular coffee is mostly between pH 4.0 and 5.0. Some people find a lower acid cup more comfortable. That varies from person to person and is not a promise.
| Factor | Regular coffee | Ra Hygge Lion's Mane coffee |
|---|---|---|
| Typical pH | Mostly 4.0 to 5.0 | Up to 6.0 |
| Acidity | Higher | Low |
| Contains caffeine | Yes | Yes |
It is still coffee with caffeine, so the tips above apply here too. You can see all of our mushroom coffees in the shop.
When to see a doctor
A little discomfort now and then is common. If you often have stomach pain or heartburn, whatever you drink, see a doctor. The same goes for strong symptoms, chest pain or a racing heart that does not settle. An article cannot tell what is behind your symptoms.

FAQ
Is it bad to drink coffee on an empty stomach?
For most healthy people it is not harmful, but it can feel stronger and cause heartburn or an uneasy stomach, especially in sensitive people. A glass of water and a small bite first help many people.
Why does coffee make me jittery in the morning?
Caffeine is absorbed faster on an empty stomach, and cortisol is naturally high in the first hours after waking. Together this can feel like jitters. A smaller cup, slower sips and breakfast first often help.
Is low acid coffee gentler on an empty stomach?
Some people find a lower acid cup more comfortable, but this varies and is not a promise. Low acid coffee still contains caffeine, so the other tips matter too.
