Mushroom coffee: what it is and how to drink it

A warm cup of coffee held in two hands

The aroma of morning coffee, a warm cup in your hands and a moment to yourself. Mushroom coffee brings this familiar ritual together with functional mushroom extracts. Ra Hygge mushroom coffee is low-acid coffee that you brew like ordinary coffee and enjoy black, with milk or with a plant-based drink.

Ra Hygge mushroom coffee starts with organic Peruvian Arabica, roasted in small batches in southern Sweden. Extracts made from mushroom fruiting bodies are added after roasting. Our principle, “Rhythm Over Rush”, invites you to find your own pace and make time for a coffee moment.

What is mushroom coffee?

Mushroom coffee is coffee with mushroom extract added. Ra Hygge uses extracts made from mushroom fruiting bodies: the visible part of the mushroom, as distinct from the mycelium growing through its substrate. The extract is added during production, so there is no need to mix in mushroom powder at home. The coffee base remains the same and the drink still contains caffeine.

Ra Hygge mushroom coffee is available as whole beans and filter-ground coffee. The organic control body code is SE-EKO-03. Our coffee blends use extracts such as lion’s mane, reishi, tremella and shiitake. Check the product page for each blend’s ingredients and available pack sizes.

What does mushroom coffee taste like?

You still get the familiar taste of roasted coffee. The Ra Hygge blog describes it as full-bodied and aromatic, with nutty and chocolate notes. Mushroom extract may add a subtle earthy or umami note, but the taste depends on the blend, grind and brewing method. Start with one blend and prepare it in your usual way.

Which mushrooms does Ra Hygge use?

Lion’s mane, reishi, tremella and shiitake are part of the Ra Hygge coffee range. In the brand’s stories, lion’s mane is associated with focus, reishi with a calmer rhythm, tremella with beauty and shiitake with balance. These themes help you explore the range; they do not mean that a cup of coffee will produce a specific health effect for everyone.

Mushroom Latin name What it is
Lion’s mane Hericium erinaceus A white, shaggy mushroom that grows on hardwood trees and is also used as an edible mushroom.
Reishi Ganoderma lucidum A woody mushroom with a glossy surface. Its tough fruiting body is usually used in tea or extract form.
Tremella Tremella fuciformis A pale, jelly-like mushroom, also known as snow fungus. Used in soups and desserts in East Asian cooking.
Shiitake Lentinula edodes A brown-capped edible mushroom known for its rich umami flavour.

Our coffee blends use extracts from these mushrooms’ fruiting bodies. Here, “functional” refers to using mushrooms in a product aimed at wellbeing; it does not mean a medicine or a guaranteed effect.

Low-acid coffee

Low acidity is one of Ra Hygge coffee’s distinctive features. The lion’s mane coffee product page lists a pH of up to 6.0 and attributes its lower acidity to gentle treatment of the beans after roasting. A higher pH means lower acidity: at pH 6, coffee is still acidic, while pure water is neutral at pH 7. The pH alone does not describe the sourness you taste or guarantee that coffee will not cause digestive discomfort. Read more on our “Why choose mushroom coffee?” page.

How to brew mushroom coffee

Use your usual brewing method. Choose a suitable grind and follow the instructions on the pack or your coffee machine. For a hand filter or French press, let freshly boiled water cool slightly before pouring it over the coffee. Adjust the coffee-to-water ratio to suit your taste.

Nespresso-compatible lion’s mane capsules are a convenient option for a quick coffee moment.

Whole beans: grind just before brewing. Choose a finer grind for espresso, a medium grind for a hand filter and a coarser grind for a French press.

Filter-ground coffee: suitable for a filter coffee machine or hand filter. For a French press or espresso machine, choose a grind suited to that method.

Capsules: use lion’s mane coffee capsules in a machine with a compatible system. Check machine compatibility on the product page before buying.

On the go: a portable espresso machine lets you take your coffee ritual with you. Before choosing a device, check whether it uses ground coffee, capsules or both. Browse portable coffee machines.

Enjoy your coffee black, with milk or with a plant-based drink. Alcohol-free liquid extracts and powdered extracts are also available separately; use them according to their own pack instructions. You do not need to add them to ready-made mushroom coffee.

Morning or evening?

Choose your coffee moment according to your daily rhythm and caffeine sensitivity. Mushroom extract does not make coffee caffeine-free or guarantee freedom from anxiety or a later energy dip. If you are sensitive to caffeine, start with a small amount and notice how you feel. For a quiet evening break, choose a caffeine-free drink; check the ingredients on mushroom tea packaging. Hygge can simply be a warm cup and time to yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Does mushroom coffee contain caffeine?

Yes. Ra Hygge mushroom coffee is based on Arabica coffee, which contains caffeine. Adding mushroom extract does not make it caffeine-free.

Does mushroom coffee taste like mushrooms?

Roasted coffee is the main flavour. Mushroom extract may add a subtle note to the blend, but this is not a separate mushroom drink. Try one blend and prepare it in a familiar way to find what you like.

Do I need special equipment to brew mushroom coffee?

No. Use your usual coffee machine, hand filter or French press and choose a suitable grind. For capsules, check that they fit your machine’s system.
